Costco is a US-based multinational company. It operates a chain of membership-only warehouses, and is among the world largest retailers. It runs more than 750 warehouses worldwide, 100 of which are located in Canada. Under the former name Price Club, the company opened the first warehouse in 1976 in San Diego, California, creating a new store format: a retail warehouse club.
The philosophy of Costco is to provide its members with wide selection of merchandise for the lowest possible price. Costco nowadays employs circa 254,000 both full-time and part-time employees and has an extensive membership base of as many as 98.5 million members. Along with its rapid growth, Costco has also gradually expanded its range of products and services. It runs its highly popular private label Kirkland Signature.
The extraordinarily wide range of products to be found at Costco include groceries, home and personal care products, clothing, electronics, appliances, furniture, pet care necessities, and much more.
Costco Canada warehouses do not differ from the traditional US format with large food courts being an inseparable part of all locations. Costco Canada has stores in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. Costco also provides its customers with a wide range of additional services such as travel and business services or Costco Auto Program.
